I'm Just Insane Enough to Try This Again...

Once upon a time I attempted the 60-day total-body conditioning program known as Insanity.  I watched the DVDs and followed along as best as I could.  Host Shaun T led me and my television friends into a series of jumps and kicks and squats and other pain-inducing exercises meant to shed pounds and sculpt us all into the toned, muscled hotness that is himself.  That was the idea at least.  I did pretty well for the first couple of days, until I skipped a day here, then another there, and we all know how that pattern spirals into a complete disaster.  I think in the end I did about 21 days of it, but not consecutively.  In other words, I didn't really do it.

And do you know what?  I'm just insane enough to try this again...

So this morning, being a Monday, I popped in the Fit Test DVD and started the first day of the first week of an 8-week program (9 if you count the recovery week between months 1 and 2).  That means I've got to do this 6-days a week until June 22nd to earn my free Insanity t-shirt and hopefully look and feel like a sexy stud muffin.

As you can see by my face, I'm terrified.

To help track my progress, I'm supposed to complete the fit test every couple weeks or so.  Here are today's numbers... which are pathetic.  We had to count the number of reps we could do in a minute.

Switch Kicks: 61
Power Jacks: 46
Power Knees: 78
Power Jumps: 28
Globe Jumps: 10
Suicide Jumps: 13
Push-Up Jacks: 17
Low Plank Obliques: 38

Everybody, wish me luck!  I'm already sore all over...

To Walk or Not to Walk

The buses run much less frequently on a Saturday.  Normally Brian's around on weekends to drive me in to work, but this time he was off baking something delicious at Culinary Crafts while I walked the few blocks down to the bus station.  And knowing the buses don't come by as often, you can imagine my disappointment as I saw the bus--more than a block away--rounding the corner and driving resolutely past the stop I should have been standing at.

Rats.  I was late for the bus and it's all Apple's fault.  Running down the stairs from my apartment I realized that I did not have the earphones to my iPod.  I had left them on the counter as to remember them on my way out, but of course I didn't remember them.  I did a little shuffle as my body switched between going back up or heading on down, before hastily deciding to run back upstairs to retrieve them.  That's where I lost those few precious minutes that would have gotten me to the bus stop on time.

And do you know what the sad part is?  On my way to the sidewalk I discovered my iPod's battery was dead so I couldn't listen to music anyway.  I wasted time for nothing.

So after seeing my bus move along without me, I arrived at the stop and looked at the schedule.  I had to wait almost an hour for the next bus.  An hour of standing there without even music to pass the time with.  That didn't sound like fun.  So I was faced with the dilemma:  To walk or not to walk?  I decided I might as well just keep on walking.  Luckily I had planned on getting to the mall where I work early, so I had about an hour and fifteen minutes to get there in.  Part of me was exhilarated by the challenge.  Could I walk that far?  Could I make it in time?  I never felt so alive.

I sent a text to my friend Michelle and she thought the idea of me walking to the Provo Towne Centre from my apartment was ridiculous if not suicidal.  I figured a little exercise couldn't hurt.  I do have a rather large belly and rear end to get rid of.  And with my new sense of resolve, I marched on, block after block after block.

I can do this.

And as I was nearing downtown Provo on a rather shady and tree-lined street, a minivan pulled over in front of me and a familiar face said, "Jack?"

Yeah, I'm not doing this.

It was my Aunt Krista.  My Uncle Greg was driving and my two little nieces were in the backseat.  They were coming back from some sort of wedding luncheon or something, and they were pretty surprised to see me walking along at a brisk pace, slightly sweaty in a dark suit and tie.

The challenge to walk all the way to work and shed some pounds went unmet; the temptation to accept a ride in an air-conditioned minivan won out.  So thus I arrived to work, still some 45 minutes early and smelling like a sumo-wrestler after running a 5K marathon.

"Hi, welcome to Zales!" I said cheerily to a customer.

The woman smiled, sniffed the air and said, "Why do I smell ass sweat?"

Easter Sunday and Stuff

March had me posting daily, so when the Optimism Challenge ended I sighed a breath of relief and took over a week off from blogging.  I was all blogged out! So what happened in my life during this brief hiatus?  I'll tell you!
Veronica is back!
  • April Fool's Day reared its ugly head.  I thought it would be funny to trick people into thinking Brian and I had broken up, so I changed our relationship status on Facebook and posted some vague thing about things being crappy just when I thought they were good.  It worked a little too well and a lot of people seemed genuinely sad about it.  My boss, Jen, was a little suspicious that I was just joking, but when I sent her a text saying I was too distraught to come into work I seemed to convince her.  I eventually texted "APRIL FOOL'S!" but not before she called a coworker and told her to come work for me.  Oops.
  • Part Two of April Fool's Day happened later when I got the idea to change Brian's birthday to April 1st on Facebook.  The birthday greetings started rolling in and it was pretty funny!  What's even funnier is that Facebook wouldn't let him change it back for a few days.  And keeping with the funny and not cruel jokes (because I now see that calling "wolf" about a destroyed relationship is a little mean), Brian's mom and sister doorbell ditched us, leaving our old statue Veronica on our doorstep with a funny note: "How could you leave me locked in a closet? I thought we were friends!" We couldn't stop laughing!!
  • Michelle and I saw Titanic 3D in theaters and it was so much fun.  I could care less for the 3D (which was barely noticeable) but it was a treat to see it on the big screen again.  I don't care who you are, that movie is a classic!  A classic, I say!
  • I wrote my very last paper for my Literary Theory class!  Yay!  Sometime this month I'll post them all for your utter boredom... I mean enjoyment.  No, no.  I mean boredom.  We get a bit of a reprieve in that class while my professor attends a conference and when she comes back it's just time for the review and the final exam.  I'm on the final stretch!
  • I've started exercising to the Insanity DVDs.  So far, so good.  We'll see how long that lasts... because a membership to Planet Fitness sure didn't pan out.
  • Easter Sunday!  Brian and I went to his family's house in the morning to decorate Easter eggs.  After our not-so-beautiful attempts at decorating eggs (because let me tell you, they do NOT come out looking like the pictures on the box), we all attended church as a family.  The last time I went to church was on Christmas, so essentially I've become what is known as a "Creaster."  Anyway, I know Brian's mom was happy to have us all there.  Later in the day we had dinner at Brian's grandparents' in Spanish Fork.  It was a very enjoyable holiday.
EASTER!

Chihuahua Comics: Oral Hygiene

My toothbrush is a dirty LIAR!  I do brush!  All the time!  Okay, sometimes I might forget to brush before bed... or sometimes when I'm rushed in the morning... or when I'm trying to discourage Brian from kissing me...  but I would notice if she ran away to Europe!

If anyone should complain about neglect it would be my dental floss...

Chihuahua Comics: Buttered Popcorn

Wow!  That large tub of popcorn sure has an attitude today, doesn't he?  Gee!  But he does have a point though.  That ridiculously large container of popcorn is unhealthy enough as it is... you really really don't need to be adding that "butter" to it.

I mean, at least share that giant popcorn tub!  You're not?  Oh, now you're getting one equally big for every one of your children.  Two for Big Bubba.  Yes, he clearly needs two of them... he does take up two seats.  That's logical I guess.  What is that you say?  Yes, I'll put extra "butter" on... no worries.  And some extra salt?  No problem.  In fact, we have a tub of lard in the back if you want to just smear that on top...

Fatty McFat Part Three

Time for the new photos.  There is some visible difference, but not enough!  I need to work harder next month.

The front view looks pretty much the same as far as my love handles and flabby arms go.  However, my belly hangs over the front of my pants a little less don't you think?

My side view shows more visible change, though, and that makes me happy.  I still have lots of belly fat to get rid of still, but it is much flatter and less curved than it once was.  Oh, and under my chin looks better!

Besides my fat, I really hate my nose in these profile shots...  I need a plastic surgeon.

Here's What's Been Going on This Month...

So I feel like this month has been a lot of impersonal fluff.  I've talked about Harry Potter and Glee, I've written some movie reviews and interviews with friends, and I've drawn some comics... but I haven't talked much about my personal life here on what is supposed to be my personal blog!  Sometimes I get so caught up with all the new fun features of Joaquin the Chihuahua that I forget to do what I did in the beginning:  write about my life.

You need to be caught up!
  • Brian doesn't exactly love his job, but he doesn't hate it either.  The only thing that's been a bit frustrating is that they keep changing the purpose of his department.  In the beginning it was to do data entry, and now it is changing to a different sort of inbound call.  I don't really understand it all, but I think he's creating new accounts for customers.  Or something like that.  His hours keep changing too.  He used to go in at ten in the morning, yesterday he went in at eleven, and today he went in at noon.  So I never really know what time he'll be getting home.  I guess 8:30 in the evening now, unless it changes again.
  • Through Brian's work we have made some new friends, which is exciting!  It's been kind of lonely with all our other friends living in Salt Lake City miles away from us, so it's really nice to have some people in Orem that we can hang out with.  A couple weeks ago we met up with Lexi, Quintin, Sam and Colby at a really fun cake shop called The Chocolate.  It's an old house that they've converted into a little dessert cafe.  We've since hung out with Lexi and Sam again eating pizza and watching episodes of Archer and the movie Kinky Boots.  Very fun!
  • My job is going really well actually.  On slow days it can be a bit boring, but overall I enjoy working in concessions.  It's very stress-free and that's what I love most!  Well, that and the fact that I get free movies.  That's a plus as well.  Brian and I have seen ten movies since I've been working!
  • I've also met some fun friends at the theater, but as of yet we haven't done anything outside of work.  Tonight I'm supposed to watch The Conspirator with Michelle, Wesley, Michael and Katie so let's hope that happens!
  • Besides the dinner date with Kelsey and Robert, the only other friends from Salt Lake City I've been able to see are Jenna and Wendy.  We ran into Jenna for a split second while she was at work.  She gave us a huge hug while screaming out, "MY BOYS!"  She didn't even know we were back in Utah, that silly girl.  And my friend Wendy drove down to Orem with her two-year-old daughter Alison to take me out to lunch.  We went to California Pizza Kitchen and then roamed around in the University Mall.  I have to say that going to the Disney Store with a toddler is so much more fun than when I go with Brian.  Sure we are big kids at heart, but there is nothing like seeing a little girl's face light up when she sees Tangled and Tinkerbell merchandise!
  • As far as school is concerned, I am slowly progressing to start in July.  Yesterday Brian and I drove up to meet with my financial aid director.  If all of my classes transfer over (which they should) I'll be considered a junior and will qualify for enough free money and loans to not pay anything upfront.  I'll take three classes my first quarter, and then take four from then on.  That's the plan at least so let's hope everything works out!  I still have a $100 enrollment fee I need to pay before I select my class schedule sometime in May or June.
  • Life with the Keslers has been pretty good.  Brian and I are supposed to be staining the wooden patio chairs and swing, but so far we've only managed to sand it.  It's hard to find time when the two of us are home.  There's also been really bad weather here all month, and we don't want to be staining while it's raining or snowing.  We need sunshine!!  Please, Spring, kick Winter out!
  • Brian has set a goal to have his novel completed by the end of the summer.  Have I ever mentioned that Brian is writing a book?  Well, he is.  What he has so far is really good, so I can't wait for him to finish it!  I need to get on him about writing like he has to get on me about exercising...
  • Speaking of exercising, these last few days I haven't been doing so well at my fitness goals.  Easter came and brought with it lots of candy which I couldn't resist.  Even now there are still eggs full of jelly beans everywhere in the house.  I've also been readdressing a music video project that I had set aside a long time ago.  It's for a group called The Beatards and I finished it today!  Yay!  The last three days I've been at the computer tinkering with that project and not exercising like I should be...  so I'm kinda bummed about that.  I hope I can buckle down today and tomorrow so that my photo on Saturday looks skinnier than the last one!

Fatty McFat Part Two

This is just a mid-month update on my fitness goals!  It was just about two weeks ago when I posted "Fatty McFat" with the proclamation that I was going to lose my gut and get healthier so help me God.  These two weeks have had their ups and downs but overall I've been pretty successful.  I just hope I can continue on with the same dedication.  In a couple of weeks I'm posting another set of photos, so I hope I look sexier in time for the photo shoot!  Ha ha, highly doubtful but a boy can dream, can't he?

The first day of exercise was torture.  All the heavy breathing and sweating left me exhausted and sick.  And what's worse, for the next three days I was so incredibly sore that I thought I might never work out again.  My arms couldn't straighten all the way, so I walked around with my arms hanging slightly bent at the elbow.  It was very odd to walk around like a chimpanzee, hoping nobody would notice.  I'd try to reach for things only to fail because I couldn't extend my arm as far as I was used to.

My legs were just as sore as my arms.  On the morning of my first day of work I went to the closet to get my work shoes and they were just sitting on the floor, taunting me.  "Why don't you bend down here and pick us up?  Come on, Jack... just squat.  Get down on one knee.  We're right here in front of you."  But I couldn't!  My legs just couldn't bend anymore.  I had become a broken old man after a mere half hour of exercise two days previously!  Eventually I just flopped onto the bed, rolled off it onto the floor, and then wormed my way over to where my shoes were.  After putting them on I couldn't get back up again so I had to call 911 and have someone come over and put me back on my feet.

Part of that story might have been an exaggeration, but I was seriously aching all over and it was limiting my ability to function.  I asked Courtney what I should do about it and she just said to keep exercising.  "Just push through it and eventually your body will stop feeling so sore."  So I started doing the exercises she taught me again, and I've been doing them pretty regularly ever since.  Some days I just don't have time, but usually on those days I walk to and from work, which is good exercise in itself.

I've also been trying to eat a bit better.  At first, I was using SparkPeople to track my calories, but I soon found it almost impossible to stay within the recommended calorie intake.  I would have a granola bar for breakfast, pack a sandwich with some carrots or applesauce for lunch, and then have like a salad with tuna for dinner and still wind up eating too many calories!  One of my friends told me not to worry so much about the calories, but to cut out sugar.  And I have been for the most part.  One day I had a chocolate candy bar, but I think that's the only really sugary thing I've had since starting this healthy quest.  I've been eating a lot more fruits and vegetables than I used to and I've been drinking lots more water.

Speaking of drinking water, it has replaced my beloved soda and the transition has been fairly easy but I still miss my Coca-Cola.  And I am surrounded by temptation.  At work we are allowed to have free soda and popcorn on our breaks, and it's hard to deny this work perk and just have my carrot sticks and water!  Sometimes I'll just be filling up a large soda for somebody at the concession stand and just really crave it.  I'm surrounded by unhealthy snack foods for eight hours at a time, but so far I am still going strong!  I kind of feel like a hypocrite telling myself that I can't have soda or popcorn while telling the customer, "Are you sure you don't want a large popcorn for just 75 cents more?  Let's add a large Coke and make it a combo!"  I'm contributing to the obesity of America.  Jamie Oliver would be so mad at me!

Anyway, here are my numbers so far.  I started this weighing 153 lbs, and now I weigh 148.  So I've lost five pounds in sixteen days.  But more importantly, my body fat has gone from 15.2% to 13.8%.  That's almost two percent!  I've realized that I don't necessarily want to lose pounds, just convert fat into muscle.  So I'm more concerned about the body fat percentage than actual weight, but I'm still keeping track of both.

Stay tuned for more Fatty McFat updates!

Fatty McFat

Look at my sad face...
Wow.  I honestly can't believe I'm posting this for all to see, but this is my body.  My flabby, fat and lazy body.  I'm like a hairy wildebeest only weaker.  Like a massive woolly mammoth only shorter.  Like Monstro the Whale with blubber by the bucketful (but not a muscle to mention).

My name is Fatty McFat, and I desperately need a change.

So today on the last day of the month, I am posting these pictures of my current unhealthy and undesirable physique.  On the last day of April, I will post new photos.  Hopefully within the month there will be some noticeable change.  If not, I'll work harder and post new photos at the end of May and on and on.  Once the photos no longer cause you to vomit at the sight of them, I'll know I've reached my goal!

And speaking of vomit, yesterday I had my first day of exercising in probably my entire life.  I'm not a fan of exercising (as you can see), so my body was more than a little shocked when I started to work out.  It was like, "What are you doing?  We don't move.  Why are we moving?  STOP, I SAY!" until I collapsed pathetically into a pile of my own vomit.  Gross.

My trainer for this endeavor is Brian's little sister Courtney.  She has me doing various exercises for my abs, arms, and legs using free weights, an exercise ball, and pretty much whatever we can find in the house!  She may be young and she may be small, but she is one tough cookie.  I'll also be walking to work everyday, which is about a half-hour each way.  I might start jogging too, and hopefully I can rope Brian into this new fitness regimen.

I also know I need to eat better, and the first thing I am cutting from my diet is soda.  I'm fairly certain I will go through withdrawals without my Coca-Cola, but it's not helping me out any.  To aid in the healthy eating, Brian has gotten some new cookbooks by Rocco DiSpirito called Now Eat This! and Now Eat This! Diet.  Basically they contain recipes to make healthier versions of the yummy food we love.  Each meal is 350 calories or less and still totally delicious.

If anyone has some weight-loss secrets they would like to share or some motivating words, please leave them in the comments below!  I pray to God the next set of pictures looks better... at least for your eyes' sake.

Chihuahua Comics: "Out in the Sun They Slave Away"

Poor Brian.  He got really really sunburned at an outdoor TV shoot.  He's really that red right now.  And my boobs really are lacking...

Cone of Shame

Just look at our poor baby!  Doesn't it just break your heart into a million pieces and then stomp all over those pieces until they've disintegrated into dust before scattering into the wind never to be seen again?
My Aunt Rachel's landlord showed up today announcing that he was going to spray the house for bugs and that we all needed to get lost for a few hours.  All of us.  Including the animals.  Okay.  So where do we go?  We've known for a while now that we needed to get Buster to a vet, but have been avoiding it with several excuses.  The most popular excuse being that we should wait until one of us gets a job.  But seeing as Buster needed to leave the house as well, and we had no other plans really, we decided that maybe today was the day to take him to the vet.

So thank you, landlord, for motivating us to get Buster to the vet.

Our poor little guy has never been before, and he was pretty scared to be left alone with complete strangers.  Trust us, it broke our hearts to have to leave him.  But leave him we did.  And while he was alone at Mission Animal Hospital undergoing many shots and a life-altering surgery, Brian and I went out to lunch.  Then we went and looked at some apartments in Palmdale.  It was an enjoyable afternoon.

Well, for us at least.  Poor Buster!  He got tons of vaccinations done (DHPP/Corona, Canine Rabies, Canine Bordetella Intranasal, Deworm) and then we did the most horrible thing you could ever do to a male dog.  We snipped off his testicles!  Okay, so we didn't do it, but we paid the vet to.  So now little Buster Keaton is just half a man.  A mere shadow of what he once was.

He's currently lying on the couch, drugged up on Morphine and only half alive it seems.  To make his emasculation even more embarrassing for him, he's wearing the "cone of shame" as they say in the movie Up.  I hope he gets to feeling better soon, because right now he's a vegetable and I just feel so sorry for him.

I pray he'll forgive us someday...

Costco Shampoo Workout

Have you ever tried to use the shampoo bottles you get from Costco?  When I saw my mother pull the new shampoo and conditioner out of her storage cupboard my jaw fell to the floor like an old Hugh Harman cartoon.  They were the size of a small child!  Each had to weigh a good ten pounds.  More maybe.  Like fifteen hundred or twenty thousand.

My mom is a tiny woman, but freakishly strong.  You would be surprised to know that she frequently lifts up 150-pound elderly people and places them onto their beds, or their toilets, or wherever else the elderly need to be placed.  Into their coffins?  Hmm…  So it goes without saying that my mother handled these shampoo and conditioner bottles with ease.

And when I took them from her, I was not expecting them to be as heavy as they were.  I didn’t have my guns prepared.  My knees weren’t bent in anticipation of the heavy lifting.  In other words, my arms fell downwards as soon as I had the bottles in my grip, pulling me down as well, colliding with the floor in an explosion of pearly, lightly fragranced foam.

After a few slips, and leaving many shampoo footprints, handprints, and buttprints on her hardwood floors, I managed to make it to the stairs leading up to the guest bathroom where my shower was to commence.  The whole while I had been cursing my flabby, weak body for not being as toned and strong as any self-respecting gay man’s should be.  That’s when I had my glorious idea!  I had come up with the greatest at-home workout routine.  All you need is a Costco membership.

With some handy Costco duct tape (be careful, they come in tire-sized rolls), I taped the shampoo bottle to my left leg and the conditioner bottle to my right leg and slowly lunged up the stairs.  I could really feel the burn in my calves and thighs.  Then I lifted a bottle over my head and did a few jogging laps around the east wing of my mother’s house.  It was a great workout.  We used to do that in P.E. as a kid, only running with a basketball instead of a shampoo bottle.  And just like when I was a kid, all the running made me throw-up.  I felt good though.  I felt like a man.

By this point I was very sweaty and stinky and I remembered that I was supposed to be showering anyway.  So after a few minutes of tinkering with the shower, then finally calling for my mom to come show me how to work it (the thing had more bells and whistles than a Swiss Army knife) I took my shower.  That’s when I realized just how impractical that shampoo bottle really was.

Hoisting it up, and then trying to turn it over, proved to be almost impossible to do.  Prying the cap open was a job for the can opener, I discovered, and then came the challenge of holding the bottle with one hand while squeezing the shampoo into the other.  You just can’t hold that bottle with one hand.  Unless you have mammoth-sized hands that can palm a basketball, there’s just no way you can single-handedly hold the bottle.  I ended up laying it on its side and catching the gushing shampoo with my little, cupped hands, wasting more than half of it down the drain.

Now I know why the bottle says “rinse and repeat.”  Like any good workout, you need to do it in reps.  I washed my hair ten times.  Rested a moment.  Washed it ten more times.  My biceps, triceps, forearms, shoulders, everything all benefited greatly from my Costco Shampoo Workout.

Cabbage Soup Diet: Day Six

Oh boy.  What can I say?  I failed, guys.  We both did.

Day Six of the Cabbage Soup Diet, in case anyone wants to do it, is soup plus all the beef you want, plus vegetables.  We were doing well, up until we went to Brian's family's house for a visit.

You see, Brian's sister Jenny wanted us to get a movie for her through our Netflix account.  It came in the mail on Friday, and Sunday was a day off for both of us, so it was agreed that we'd take it down to her and visit the family as well.  We hadn't been down to see them in well over a month.

Little did I know, Brian's mom was planning a dinner for us.  Not only that, but it was a dinner in my honor.  A surprise, belated birthday feast!  And how could I say no to something so sweet and heartfelt?

So birthday cake proved to be our downfall.  No more Cabbage Soup Diet for us.

However, we did manage to lose weight in the five days we did it.  I lost an inch off of my stomach and 8 pounds!  So if you see a really skinny guy eating birthday cake, that's probably me.  I'm skinny now.

Well, skinnier.

Cabbage Soup Diet: Day Five

Here we are again at the end of another long diet day.  The fifth day of the Cabbage Soup Diet has us eating the titular soup along with 10-20 ounces of beef and up to six tomatoes!  Woo hoo!

Not a huge fan of tomatoes plain and unaccompanied, but the beef was definitely a plus.  I've been a vegetarian for the past four days, so it was nice to sink my teeth into something carnivorous.  Brian prepared small little hamburger patties for me before heading to work, so all day I've just been reheating them and eating them along with some tomatoes.  I found that if I skewer some beef and tomato onto my fork at the same time, it's actually quite tasty and satisfying.

Tonight I went out with some friends to see Going the Distance and they loaded up on popcorn and cookies while I sat there with a growling stomach.  They kept "forgetting" I was on this diet and would offer me whatever they were eating.  Such temptation!  However, I stayed strong.  No delicious movie treats for me.

Just two more days.  Just two more days.

Cabbage Soup Diet: Day Four

"This s*** is bananas!  B-A-N-A-N-A-S!"

And so is this diet.  Day Four had me eating bananas and skim milk all day long.  I'm not sure if I'm losing weight or slowly regressing into an orangutan.  So much for the theory of evolution.

Brian was doing some regressing today as well.  In the beginning he was walking tall, handling this diet without complaint.  Today, however, he was reduced to almost nothing.  Crawling around on the floor in hunger.

"I don't look any skinnier!" he lamented.  "This diet isn't working.  It's dumb.  Let's stop doing it."

"I know it sucks.  But we can't quit," I said firmly.  I'm such a quitter.  I need to follow through with something.  "Besides, I'm blogging about it," I added, "What will people think if we quit?"

"Just write like you're still doing it."

What a tempting idea!  But no, we're sticking this thing out.  Self-inflicted torture is apparently my new thing.

I bet I've planted a seed of doubt in your mind now, haven't I?  By mentioning the "just lie" comment?  You're probably wondering if I'm still doing the diet or if I'm just saying that I'm still doing the diet.  Well, I guess you'll have to just trust me.

Or ask yourself this:  Is an orangutan capable of deceit?

Cabbage Soup Diet: Day Three

Wow.  Sorry for the sudden outburst.  It was almost like a weird symptom of Tourette Syndrome.  Instead of yelling obscenities I just shout out my distaste for diet foods.

To be fair, the cabbage soup Brian made is actually pretty tasty (well, obviously, this is Brian we're talking about here) and I don't really hate it.  It's just that I've had 6 bowls of it over the last 3 days... and I've got 4 more days to go.

Day Three was a combination of the first two days, meaning both fruits and vegetables along with my soup.  When I got home from work, Brian had a veggie tray and a fruit tray sitting out for us.  While we watched an old DVD of The French Chef with Julia Child making deliciously fatty meals, we were eating broccoli.  Raw broccoli.  Without Ranch to dip it in, it's not very good.  I had Brian steam the broccoli for me, and it tasted much better.  However, it made me wish that it was covered in melted cheese...  and alas, there is no cheese on any day of the diet.

Oh, I must mention that there was one thing from yesterday that was not permitted today.  The baked potato.  And no baked potato means no butter.

I NEED SOME BUTTER!

Cabbage Soup Diet: Day Two

After posting last night I got to be so very very hungry.  No amount of grapes could fill me up!  I was craving almost anything and everything.  What's on Food Network?  Oh, bad idea.  Aah!  Commercial for Toaster Strudels.  We have Toaster Strudels.  I could get one out of the freezer right now and toast one... NO!  No.  Eat some peaches, Jack.  Turn the TV off, go into the kitchen and... no, not the kitchen.  Get out of the kitchen!

Today is all about vegetables. This morning Brian had carefully put raw vegetables into bags for me.  One was marked "Breakfast" so I tried to gnaw on some carrots while getting ready for work.  I ate maybe half a carrot and some water before rushing out the door.  After work I had some spaghetti squash (I actually really really like spaghetti squash by the way) and some cabbage soup.

The best part though, would have to be the baked potato!  That's right, something resembling food I ate before the diet.  Day two of the diet allows for one baked potato at dinner with butter even!  Yes, butter.  So that baked potato with butter was like nirvana.  I was literally licking the plate.

This diet's been tough so far, but I'm going to stick it through.  Brian feels more full and satisfied than I do, and keeps telling me that I don't have to do the diet if I don't wanna.  But I need to lose the weight as much as he does, and if he's going to be all skinny so will I!

My friends and family haven't been very supportive though.  Here's what a few of them have been saying:

Totally unsupportive right?  If they were a bra, I'd return them.

However, I have all the faith in the world that this diet will work.  In fact, this diet will work so well, I won't even have to wear a bra at all.  My man boobs will be history.

Cabbage Soup Diet: Day One

Brian and I aren't obese by any means, but we're definitely not as thin as we would like to be.  Everyday I seem to resemble the Pillsbury Doughboy more and more.  Seriously, if somebody else decides to poke my belly I don't know what I'll do.  Probably eat them...

So Brian had the idea of starting the Cabbage Soup Diet, which basically consists of eating cabbage soup for 7 days straight.  Sounds delicious, right?  But each day in the plan is different.  The first day, today, allows me to eat as much cabbage soup as I want along with as much fruit as I want.  Plus lots of water to drink!  So for breakfast I had cantaloupe and strawberries; lunch was cabbage soup, peaches, and watermelon; and for dinner I had more cabbage soup, grapes, an apple and an orange.  I've also had about 8 glasses of water, which is a lot for me!

For a man my height (5'8") I should ideally weigh between 139 to 169 pounds.  I am right at the top of that range (168) and that's scary!  But apart from weight, I want to lose inches in my belly.  That's really our main focus here: losing that gut.  My gut is 35 inches around, while my waist is only 30 inches.  My stomach literally hangs over my belt and that is not sexy.  Not sexy at all.

So wish me luck, kids!  I'll be keeping you posted every day... unless, of course, I die from hunger.
